The Alresford Eel House

It was with great interest that four a group of  four from HIAS visited the last remaining Eel House in Hampshire on the 9th May at the request of David Goodman, a member of the Alresford Town Trust.   Situated on the waters of the Arle in the Arle Valley and dating from the 1820s, the Eel House was originally part of the Arlebury Estate and was in operation until the early 1950s.  As you can see from the photographs below, it is in very poor condition and in need of major work as a matter of some urgency, especially to the foundations, otherwise the whole thing will collapse into the river.

Needless to say, a lot of money of required to start the renovation work and although various bodies have promised some, a lot more is needed.  If you have any ideas of where Alresford Town Trust can obtain more funding please contact HIASinfo@uk2.net or any committee member.   Members of HIAS hope to be involved once work gets underway.

Once renovated, it will be accessible to the public, as it is conveniently situated alongside the Wayfarers Way footpath and only a short distance from Alresford Town Centre.
